Ben's Chili Bowl, a famous DC landmark.

 Whether you live in Washington, DC or are just here for a visit, if you haven’t eaten at Ben’s Chili Bowl, don’t tell anyone.   The immediate reaction is never a slight suggestion, but instead a command, “you have to go!”  To residents in the know it’s as much a landmark to the city as the Washington Monument, The White House, or the Capital Building.   Visiting DC and not going to Ben’s Chili Bowl is like going to Philadelphia and not getting a cheese steak, going to Boston and not getting chowder (chowdah), or going to Texas and not getting Tex-mex.  It’s that much of a staple. There is always a line here and if you ever find yourself out on the town past last call you are sure to also eventually find yourself in the line at Ben’s Chili Bowl.
Ben’s has been a staple of the district since 1958 and has recently gotten more attention due to several visits from Mr. Obama who has brought several other famous dignitaries including the Ambassador of France.  As a matter of fact, there is a sign hanging on one of the soda fountains that states, “the only people that eat free at Ben’s is Bill Cosby and the Obama Family”.

   Its extremely quaint and no frills environment is open late and staffed by friendly locals. It’s conveniently located across from the U Street / African American Civil War Memorial / Cardozo Metro stop.  For two people, don’t be expect to spend more than 20 dollars.  I spent 18 dollars between two people and even had a second helping of food because it was so good.

 It’s obviously known for its late night hangover preventative qualities, but be warned if you go in the middle of the day.  If you aren't coming from the bars at Dupont Circle or Adam's Morgan you may be overcome by the sights, sounds and smells at Ben's Chili bowl. Ben's feels like it is still caught in the 50's or 60's and you shouldn't expect to be dazzled.  It’s a greasy spoon diner, plain and simple, with large pots of chili and frying sausages.

   For the price and the festive environment, you will not find a better bowl of chili anywhere. The chili half-smoke or sausage chili dog is definitely worth the trip.  Ben’s Chili Bowl is the quintessential cheap eat in DC and has to be mentioned.  I won’t be the first or the last to tell you that “you have to go”.
